Residents of the Zoo
I have had a variety of pets. There have been guinea pigs, several species of water turtles, box and wood turtles and tortoises, cats, dogs, and lots of birds - from little finches and canaries to cockatiels, parakeets and parrots. Also, many schools of tropical fish, koi and stingrays. It is a full time job just keeping up with cleaning and feeding, but I love them all and it is a lot of fun.
Most of the animals require special foods.
The stingrays eat worms and smelt. They also manage to grab an occasional rosie or small goldfish.
The guinea pigs get a wide variety of fruits and vegetables as well as timothy hay and pellets.
I feed the koi romaine lettuce and tetra floating sticks.
The land and water turtles get romaine and fruits and vegetables as well as prepackaged foods that I rehydrate.
The tortoises get romaine laced with calcium, hay and selected fruits and vegetables.
The birds probably have the biggest variety of foods. I cook for them every day. They get a base of seeds in a small dish. They get anything from french toast dipped in baby food, to cheese and chicken and scrambled eggs with blueberries, brown rice or just fresh fruit and vegetables.
I spent a lot of time researching what foods were best for my pets. So much of the information out in cyberland is vague, that I had a hard time finding specifics for some of them.
